Step 5: Attend your first session!
Your email reminder, should state whether is a virtual or in-person session.
If your intake is in person, please plan to arrive a few minutes early to make sure you can secure parking and find our office on the first floor of the Forum Building. We have a large parking lot with several covered parking spaces, however downtown construction sometimes makes it a little tricky getting into our parking lot and can add a few minutes to your drive. You can take a seat in our lobby in Suite 130, make yourself a hot tea or grab a cup of cold water, use the restroom, and take some breaths. Your provider will come get you for your session when it is your appointment time.
If your intake is via telehealth, you will receive a link either in your text messages or your email or both; please plan to click that link a few minutes before your session start time, as it will guide you through a set up (if you are using a smartphone) or it will open your browser and ask you for permissions to use your camera and microphone. Please make sure you are in a confidential space with minimal distractions, e.g. not driving or multitasking.
Your intake session will be in two parts: review of paperwork first, then intake assessment. Your provider will introduce themselves and go over their professional disclosure statement, review the consent forms and practice policies in your intake packet, and specifically review any other documents you indicated you wanted followed up. They will make sure to answer any questions you might have, then transition into your intake assessment. During this assessment they will ask questions about why you are seeking therapy, what you are experiencing and what symptoms are causing you distress, and how different parts of your life are affecting your mental health. They will ask questions about safety, and as indicated, build a safety plan with you. Together you will collaboratively work to identify goals for your therapy and the best frequency of sessions to support your goals (e.g., weekly, biweekly, etc.). At the end of your first session, you and your provider will confirm your next appointment, and they will walk you back to the lobby.
